Title: A Vow to Keep

Four Months Earlier

They had searched for a month, but found nothing. While there weren’t a lot of planets, it was a delicate job dealing with some of the governments trying to get them to agree to help. There was at least one planet’s government they ended up insulting. And there were a few Daniel wanted to return to because something was just not right.

Cameron had been released from the hospital after a week and ordered to go home and see Dr. Lam once a week. Daniel would come home from a mission with the team warn out. But he would crawl in bed next to Cam and hold onto him half the night awake before complete exhaustion would knock him out. He would stay with Cam for a day or two and take him to see Dr. Lam before going back offworld.

Each visit to the doctor seemed to be worse. She began to detect a slow failure in his organs.

After the month of searching Cameron woke up one morning looking haggard and weak. He had started experiencing intermittent pain all through his body. Some days he couldn’t keep food down. But there were good days where he could almost convince himself nothing was wrong.

This was a good day he could tell when he woke up turning to look at his lover. He kissed the other man. Daniel’s eyes opened and he gave a half hearted smile.

“Our next mission is in a few hours,” Daniel said.

“Stay,” Cam said.

“What?” Daniel sat up looking confused. “We have one more planet to go to and then I need to go back to a couple others.”

“Daniel, I don’t know how much time I have left,” Cameron began.

“That’s why I have to go,” Daniel said.

“No,” Cameron said. “That’s why I need you here. I want to spend whatever time I have left with the person I love,” Cam pressed his lips to Daniel’s.

They stripped each other of their clothes making love to one another. Daniel worshipped his lover’s body caressing and kissing every inch of it.

Later they lay naked in each other’s arms. “I’ll stay,” Daniel whispered.

The next day Cameron was still feeling pretty good and he decided he wanted to take a road trip.

“Where to?” Daniel asked sitting across the kitchen table from Cam.

“My parents,” Cam said.

“That’s a lot of hours,” Daniel said.

“We don’t have to get there all in one day,” Cam responded. “We can stop at a motel.”

“What are you going to tell your parents when we get there?”

“As much of the truth as I can,” he said.

Daniel stood up and walked over to Cam wrapping his arms around his lover and holding him close. He could feel Cameron’s arms wrap around him tightly and feel the tears soak his shirt.

Present

Jack entered the hospital room and moved over next to Daniel. “Cam’s parents’ flight should be getting in soon.”

“Oh god,” Daniel pressed his hand to his forehead. “Jack, would you mind…?”

“Picking them up?” He filled in for Daniel.

“Yeah,” Daniel said.

“Not a problem. How’s he doing?” Jack nodded toward Cam.

“Sleeping,” Daniel said. He hoped Cam’s parents would be supportive of what Daniel would be asking of them when they arrived. He had made a vow to Cameron and while they could not be legally married he was going to keep it no matter what.
