Yesterday two separate animal stories had me balling. In one there was a story on AOL about a rescue dog, Jake, who died this week of cancer. He was one of the dogs at the World Trade Center after the Sept. 11, 2001 attack who ws searching for bodies or survivors. He was twelve and there are those wondering if his presence at ground zero had been the cause of the cancer. Although the cancer is not uncommon on dogs his age. Just all the great things he did in his life were amazing and heart warming.
The second thing I was reading about was the baby (although not a baby anymore) Hippo Owen and the 130 year old Tortoise Mzee. After the 2004 Tsunami, Owen was left when his mother was killed in the storm. He met Mzee who became his surrogate mother for awhile. I was looking at an update on them yesterday and found a blog from a worker at the habitat the two live at. Owen has a new Hippo friend Cleo. And Mzee lives in another area separate from Owen now. As the person doing the blog said, it's human for us to wish Owen and Mzee were still together, but it's for the best that Owen is with his kind.
There's a book that was written about them on amazon.com. "Owen and Mzee: The True Story Of a Remarkable Friendship" There are even plushies Owen and Mzee on Amazon.com.
